Local UNA president Mel Boynton said, "We had an outstanding group of writers this year. Judges Art Sutton, Emily Burch, Jaideep Sahai, Marilee Scaff, and I sorted through these essays using a grading rubric from the national UNA. The names of the authors were not known until after the judging. Jane Purcell is an exceptional teacher and, once again, we had a difficult job in selecting the very best from this large group of well-written research essays. The students all learned that the United States can do much more to help mothers survive and their letters were all sent to the White House. Around the world, some 500,000 mothers currently die each year from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. The annual UNA essay contest engages students with serious world issues and we're proud of their hard work and scholarship."
