UNA-USA Advocacy Center
UNA-USA chapters and individual members are encouraged to undertake
activities that demonstrate to elected officials in Washington the strong
local level support that exists across the country for an active US leadership
role in the United Nations. The
MOBILIZES Advocaccy Center of the UNA-USA website contains
information that can help you be an effective advocate for the United
Nations in your community and among the policy-makers that shape US-UN
relations.
POMONA VALLEY UNA-USA 2007-2008 ACTION PLAN
GOAL #1: BUILDING MEMBERSHIP
Objective #1: Develop programs that
will interest and attract new members.
Implementing Activity:
- Advertise and hold monthly
programs and meetings with speakers on international subjects.
- Make membership materials available at all UNA events and ask
all Board members to recruit at least one new member each year.
Objective #2 Regularly publish a Chapter newsletter.
Implementing Activity:
- Appoint newsletter editor.
- Work in cooperation with other non-profits to share costs
and content of newsletter.
- Work toward options for electronic distribution of newsletter
for those that prefer.
- Use newsletter to promote membership (i.e., include membership
form).
Objective #3: Maintain membership contacts and personalize
renewals.
Implementing Activity:
- Target yearly membership
goals including specific groups to recruit from and individuals to
enroll.
- Advertise ways members can participate in and benefit UNA.
- Use membership cards to build value (e.g., listing MDGs on back
of cards).
- Provide renewal incentives.
- Have a Membership Chair or Chapter Board
Membership Chair check annually with national UNA for accurate member
data and new contacts.
GOAL #2: DEVELOPING FINANCIAL RESOURCES
Objective #1: Analyze financial needs.
Implementing Activity:
- Prepare and adopt annual
budget.
- Analyze income and expenses for appropriate levels.
Objective #2: Develop programs that the public will support
financially.
Implementing Activity:
- Hold another Global Health
Conference.
- Suggest contributions at UNA events.
Objective #3: Continue seeking other organization support
for chapter.
Implementing Activity:
- Maintain and expand
financial contributions from other organizations (such as University
Club, International Place, and shared expenses with sister groups)
GOAL #3: EXPANDING ADVOCACY & COMMUNICATION
Objective #1: Promote public discussion of multilateral
approaches to global issues and the United Nations.
Implementing Activity:
- Continue to promote and expand
UNA Essay Contest.
- Enhance local awareness of the United Nations and UN
issues.
- Initiate media coverage of UNA and UN-related issues.
- Involve community groups in Global Policy Project.
Objective #2: Mandate specific advocacy actions.
Implementing Activity:
- Appoint an Advocacy Chair
with responsibility and resources for timely resource and action
on policy issues.
- Participate in UNA-USA advocacy programs/alerts on an informed
basis.
- Establish and maintain contact with elected state officials and
members of Congress Expand existing Op Ed pieces in local and major
newspapers.
Objective #3: Collaborate with local NGOs on like-minded issues.
Implementing Activity:
Collaborate more inclusively
with international affairs organizations.
- Expand existing partnerships in Pomona Valley with International
Place, Peace with Justice, Martin Luther King, Kurdish-American
Education Society, and Human Relations Council
Objective #4: Maximize technology and website communications.
Implementing Activity:
- Appoint or hire webmaster
to update chapter website.
- Continue to expand use of email for communications with members
and friends.
- Use spreadsheets for membership – allowing several people
to improve tracking.
Objective #5: Continue involvement with local
schools and libraries and provide UNA educational materials, including
Model UN resources.
Implementing Activity:
- Support working to incorporate
UN in textbooks and curriculum in schools.
- Continue local school classroom
visits and school assembly presentations (e.g., and show the UNA
videos) Promote internship program with a local colleges for specific
UNA projects.
- Compile lists of Model UN advisors and other teachers
focused on international affairs, and remain in regular contact with
them.
GOAL #4: UNDERTAKING PROGRAMS
Objective #1: Be an active participant in planning UN
Day or other UNA events with members, the public and other UNA chapters.
Implementing Activity:
- Lead celebration of
UN Day with participation in planning by International Place, City
Council members, school and college teachers and students, and local
NGOs.
- Continue 4th of July table and parade participation.
- Collaborate with
like-minded NG0s on UN-related issues. Hold another Global Health
Conference.
Objective #2: Conduct scheduled monthly meetings
and/or programs.
Implementing Activity:
- Continue monthly meetings
and programs that make the chapter board representative of the diversity
of the community.
- Promote Chapter sponsorship of art contests co-sponsored
by local art stores.
- Schedule Chapter 'Night of 100 Dinners'- type
events or Hunger Banquets co-sponsored by local restaurants.
Objective #3: Promote Chapter
representation at UNA-USA Annual Meetings, biennial Conventions and
UN Department of Public Information Meetings.
Implementing Activity:
- Continue to send two
to four Chapter representatives to national UNA meetings every year.
